DESIGN CONCEPT
Core Concept
Turning 2D coloring game into a real 3D city. Through your phone, you will see the magic. Users can use several pre-defined colors to paint on a grid paper. Each color represent one kind of district or type of buildings. Then take a picture with your phone, then you will see your dream city built on the paper through your screen.
Ultilize augmented Reality
From google glass to Nokia City lens, augmented reality is really a "cool" technology. The whole project is based on this concept, instead of building a static and rigid city in your phone, we actually build a city on a piece of physical paper! Users can see it and interact with it through their phones.
3D modeling & user customization
We bulid up our own library for 3D buildings. In each categories, users can choose buildings in different shapes, sizes and structures.

Different colors represent different type of buildings:
Green: Residencial
Yellow: Entertaining
Blue: Commercial
Red: Public facilities (Church/ Hospital/ Museum..)

USER TEST
In order to find out how will people actually draw on paper, then define the proper color and shapes for this game, we conducted a user test.

12 different users are asked to use different shapes and colors to design their own city, you can find the instructions and two of their design below.


" Cannot tell difference between commercial building and shopping mall
→ will eliminate shopping mall
For roads and park, users did not draw the shape at all, just fill in the remaining colours.
→ colour detection instead of shape detection
Users draw irregular shapes because he thinks it is “area” not the building
→ will define it as buildings instead of area.
users tried to add new things
One directional road with arrows on the road
Tennis court and football court. In green with word description next to it.
Add tunnel, so that people can across the roads
→ ignore all “undefined” things during detection
Users drew wrong colours but cannot erase it with ball pens
→ Erasable pens / use a new paper when sth is wrong

In their design, we find several detailed problems, which guide us to re-design the whole game.
